The Evolution of Neville Longbottom

Leading up to the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, lots of people were buzzing around the famous trio - Harry, Ron and Hermione. We saw lots of galleries of the actors Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson and how their appearances changed through the years. But what about the Boy Who Could Have Been - Neville Longbottom? Actor Matthew Lewis may have undergone the most remarkable physical changes of the entire Harry Potter cast and I've yet to come across a gallery showing it. So I made one. Ladies and Gentlemen I give you, "The Evolution of Neville Longbottom."

In 2001's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, J.K. Rowlings marvelous world was brought to life for all to see. In the book, Neville was described as round-faced, short and plump with bucked teeth and Lewis fit the bill. Although down the road we learned he was fitted for false teeth and had his ears made to stick out in order to better look the part. He also wore shoes two sizes too big in order to make him appear clumsy.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, released just a year after the first film, meant the child actors didn't have much time to grow. But then...

Two years later in 2004's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Lewis, like many other members of the cast, had his growth spirt. In fact, when I first saw it, I remember not even recognizing him during the first twenty minutes of the film.

In 2005's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Lewis grew slightly and took on the shaggy haired look Radcliffe and Grint also had in the film.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix arrived two years later. By that time, no one knew whether to call the male actors men or boys and some of us where having inappropriate thoughts for women of our age. Not me. Not for Neville anyway. Not yet.

Times were already dark for the wizarding world but in 2009's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, things got even worse. Neville was still used for comedic effect but he was also continuing to come into his own.

Now we come to the penultimate film in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Neville doesn't actually have much screen time this go around but if you've read the books you know to expect much more of him in Part 2.

And finally we come to Neville as he appears today. Or should I saw how Matthew Lewis looks today. Here he is at the premiere of Deathly Hallows last week in London. Sans Hogwarts gear, false teeth or fat suit of course. And may I say, without fear of incarceration now, he's looking quite dashing. Who could have predicted chubby faced Neville would turn out to be the best looking of the bunch? I see leading man in his future.

Making Neville the "hero" of the first book was one of the most delightful surprises I'd had in fiction in years. In the narrative, it also showed the genius of Dumbledore - Harry didn't need to get the glory, and it made Neville an instant friend to his entire house.

His tragic family story was given too short shrift in the movies, and I'll be curious to see how much he gets in the last two.

I agree. I really wanted them to spend some time focusing on his parents in #5. I mean, I can obviously see why they didn't but it would have been a nice addition for Neville fans.

I developed a small cougar like crush on him when the photos for Goblet starting coming out. I'm guessing it had to do with my adoration for the character more than Lewis himself. But now... Handsome little devil.

Even though I'm only a couple years older, I feel like a full on creeper.

No one who's seen the most recent pictures of Emma Watson would say that "Neville" is the most attractive of the bunch. He's a handsome, dashing man, no argument. But Watson...I'm speechless.

She's gorgeous, no doubt, but I prefer gentlemen. :)

He's been one of my favorite characters through the films.

Jill, have you seen the movie yet? What's the final prognosis? Mrs. D has dragged me along to see every one of the films. I'm not much of a Harry fan and suffered through the first 3 or 4....or 5 (I think I fell asleep halfway through The Sorceror's Stone). I'll admit though, as the movies have taken a darker bent, I find myself enjoying them. And yes, admitting that caused me to throw up in my mouth just a little. Don't tell my wife I said that.

WOW! I would not have recognized him in that last picture. Looking very good! I can't wait to see him in other things.

Verdict is, it was really good. But I have a feeling you might be bored for a good portion of it if you aren't already a fan.

I've slept through Twilight, one sequel, 2 HP movies, and Cliffhanger (okay, going back a way on that one), so what's one more?

I will read the series one of these days, but for now, I'm just the casual fan of the family.

Woah. I definitely didn't see that coming! Hello Neville! Nice timeline blog post.I'm going to see it again tomorrow, because I enjoyed it that much and also because I can't wait for the second one, so seeing it twice will have to do. x

Thanks for this! I love Neville and he doesn't get near the attention he deserves. I really wish the character had been featured more in the movies, but I do understand he couldn't why he couldn't be due to time restraints.

well we've got tickets for this afternoon Miss Jill. I'll let you know what I think. I told my brothers I may even post up a review.

Wow. Thanks for that! I had no idea he was so hot! There is no way I would have guessed that last picture was him.
I cannot wait to see his part in the second half. That little bit of him made me so happy because Neville deserves a lot more glory than he gets.

OH. MY. GOD.

I'm not a fan of franchise (I don't know why, actually... oh well...), but oh my god how this boy has grown!
