In the beginning, there were novels filled with fables. Then came those same Fables in comic book form. Now it's time for those famous fables to get back to their roots. This October, Vertigo will release "Peter & Max: A Fables Novel."
Announced at this years WonderCon, "Peter & Max" will be written by none other than Fables creator Bill Willingham. Additionally, the prose novel will feature several illustrations by the comic's inker, Steve Leialoha. Comic Book Resources reported, "It will feature an 8 page traditional comic story in the back of the book, which will serve as a bridge between the novel and the regular series."
So, just exactly who and what is this novel about? The answer and cover photo comes via Whitney Matheson at Pop Candy, "[It] tells the dark story of brothers Peter Piper, of Pickled Pepper fame, and Max Piper, the Pied Piper of Hamelin." Two of the lesser-known characters in the Fables universe but an intriguing duo to be sure. "Willingham says he wrote his novel for everyone, and readers don't need to be familiar with the Fables universe to appreciate 'Peter & Max,'" said Matheson.
I'm a huge Fables fan so naturally I'm very excited for this. And what a wicked cover! Also, it could be a great way to bring new readers to the comic if they enjoy the novel. I'm confident enough to recommend this to people before I've read one page. What I'm really interested to learn is, where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?
